The APS recently completed a brief review of a range of internet-based services and products. This review was developed in order to address a gap in knowledge and provide psychologists with examples and a critique of some of the mental and physical health-related websites that exist. Wherever possible it provides summary information of the services and products (including URL), as well as commenting on the strengths and limitations of the site. Due to the scope and nature of the internet, the review cannot be exhaustive but does aim to give the reader an idea of what is potentially available and what some of the risks might be.
Big White Wall offers an individual online therapy called LiveTherapy and is helpful for people who struggle with emotional health problems or difficult life experiences. Despite of that, there is an online platform which offers access to a community of people experiencing common mental health issues. Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) has compiled guidelines intended for counsellors/psychotherapists who provide therapy and/or supervision using technology or via the internet. The 78 minute Webinar “Bridging Social Media and Mental Health Support for Youth” deals with aspects how practitioners can you work more effectively and efficiently with youth, how they can use social media to promote early identification and what resources they can use to extend psycho-education into youths’ everyday lives.
The project Youth-Life-Line successfully engages in counselling and supporting suicidal youths, suicidal prevention as well as qualifying voluntary young people. Key concepts are counselling via mail and peer-to-peer counselling. Support and supervision of peer-counsellors are provided by pedagogic-therapeutic professionals. Moreover the project offers trainings for multipliers in order to increase competence in handling suicidal children and adolescents.
